WHAT IS ALCOHOL ABUSE?

Alcohol abuse refers to a continued pattern of excessive drinking despite negative consequences, it includes:

 
 
 

Excessive drinking

This refers to when a person frequently exceeds the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines of 14 units per week. That’s the same as:

  • Six pints of 4% ABV beer or

  • Six medium (175ml) glasses of 13% ABV wine.

14 units is the same as six medium-sized glasses of 13% ABV wine.

14 units is the same as six medium-sized glasses of 13% ABV wine.


Binge drinking

Consuming more than six units of alcohol for both men and women is typically seen as binge drinking. That’s the same as:

  • Two large glasses of (250ml) of 12% ABV wine or

  • Two pints of 5% ABV beer or cider or

  • Six shots 40% proof clear spirits.

A binge is drinking any more than two large glasses of wine, two pints of 5% ABV beer or six shots of spirits in one ‘session’.

Alcohol abuse is not the same as alcohol dependence.

Alcohol dependence refers to when an individual displays a physical and/or psychological compulsion to drink. Please seek medical advice before changing your drinking if you think you’re alcohol dependent.
